About This Place

Nestled in the vibrant East Village of New York City, Hi-Collar offers a refined yet cozy dining experience centered around authentic Japanese comfort food, brunch, and expertly crafted coffee. This inviting Japanese restaurant and bar is a haven for those craving soulful flavors with a modern twist, where every dish delivers a heartfelt connection to Japan’s culinary heritage.

The star of the menu is undoubtedly their Original Omurice with Katsu — a delightfully fluffy, velvety omelette that blankets seasoned rice, paired with a crispy pork katsu, bringing layers of warmth and indulgence in each bite. Equally compelling is the Hayashi Omurice, which features a savory, rich Hayashi sauce paired with perfectly cooked eggs, showcasing a harmony of creamy textures and deep, comforting flavors. Fans of katsu will relish the Pork Katsu Sandwich, a satisfying, crispy sandwich perfect for a hearty brunch or casual dinner. For pasta lovers, the Mentai Cream Pasta balances delicate creaminess with a subtle umami kick from mentaiko, while the Takoyaki offers authentic bites of crispy, savory octopus balls.

Breakfast and brunch at Hi-Collar feel like a small moment of joy. Their Green Tea Hot Cakes and Mixed Berry Hot Cakes stand out with light, fluffy textures infused with gentle sweetness — ideal for those who savor a slower, indulgent morning. The dessert selections, from the silky Purin À La Mode topped with fresh fruit and whipped cream to the elegant Daiginjo Matcha Tiramisu combining creamy mascarpone with delicate Ginjo sake, elevate the meal into a memorable culinary journey.

Coffee enthusiasts are also in for a treat. Hi-Collar’s house blends, Batsuni and Hana, showcase a mastery of balance — the Batsuni brings deep, rich notes without veering into harsh roastiness, while the Hana delights with sweet undertones of dark chocolate and ripe berries. Pair these with the Iced Siphon Coffee or refreshing Japanese Iced Coffee for an authentically crafted caffeine experience.

The ambiance strikes a beautiful balance between modern minimalism and traditional Japanese aesthetics. Warm wooden accents and intimate bar seating create a welcoming atmosphere that feels both familiar and thoughtfully curated. Customers frequently comment on the attentive and friendly service, making each visit feel personal and inviting.

Adding to the unique appeal, Hi-Collar transforms into a lively jazz bar every Sunday from 5 PM, blending smooth live music with its signature drinks and dishes — a perfect way to unwind and savor the evening.

Whether you’re drawn by the comforting embrace of the hayashi sauce or the delicate sweetness of their desserts, Hi-Collar in the East Village stands out as a heartfelt celebration of Japanese flavors, elevated with New York’s spirited energy. As one satisfied guest put it, “If you’re craving some authentic Japanese, definitely give this place a try.”

This place is amazing! We sat at the bar which was really fun. We got the regular omurice which reminded us of being back in Japan, it was perfect. The pancakes were fun but I might skip them next time to order another savory dish. Highly recommend!

The Hayashi Omurice was so satisfying - the egg was perfectly velvety and soft, and paired beautifully with the rich Hayashi sauce. The ambience of the restaurant has a lovely blend of modern and traditional Japanese aesthetics with warm and wood-accented decors. A charming spot for a simple & comforting Omurice and other Japanese bites.

the vibes were amazing and so was the food! had the parfait but a friend got the omurice—the egg was so soft and warm, and the portion seemed really reasonable and good for its price point! the pour over coffee was delightful with more acidity than bitterness, and the tangerine tea had notes of citrus which was quite refreshing. on sundays from 5pm there is a live jazz bar; would definitely come visit for that hour next time!

The center Japan style water fountain and cute bar on the side brings a bit of Japan to new york East Village location. Good use of former sushi place decor. The service meets expectation and friendly host. The food can use a little help. Great lunch date spot.
